NewJeans – “ETA” lyrics, Romanized, English translation
Verse 1
[Hyein, Haerin, Danielle, Hanni]
낭비하지 마 네 시간은 은행
[Nangbihaji ma ne siganeun eunhaeng]
Don’t waste your time. Time is like money
서둘러서 정리해 걔는 real bad
[Seodulleoseo jeongnihae gyaeneun] real bad
Come on and end it, he’s real bad
받아주면 안돼
[Badajumyeon andwae]
Don’t indulge him
No, you better trust me
답답해서 그래
[Dapdapaeseo geurae]
I’m doing this because I’m a bit frustrated.
저번에도 봤지만 너 없을 때
[Jeobeonedo bwatjiman neo eopseul ttae]
I saw it before but when you weren’t there
걘 여기저기에 눈빛을 뿌리네
[Gyaen yeogijeogie nunbicheul ppurine]
Sprinkling his gaze everywhere
아주 눈부시게
[Aju nunbusige]
So dazzling
Honestly 우리 사이에
Honestly [uri saie]
honestly between us
He’s been totally lyin’, yeah
Pre-Chorus
[Hyein, Minji, Danielle, Hanni]
내 생일 파티에 너만 못 온 그날
[Nae saengil patie nеoman mon on geunal]
The day you couldn’t come to my birthday party
혜진이가 엄청 혼났던 그날
[Hyejiniga eomchеong honnatdeon geunal]
The day Hyejin got in so much trouble
‘혜진이가(Hyejiniga)’ also sounds like ‘헤어진 네가(‘you who broke up’ in Korean)’. Korean rapper Beenzino, who wrote the lyrics, is famous for his witty use of these punchlines. It is a lyrics that stands out with his unique punchline. Such unique punchlines make his lyrics stand out and contribute to his popularity as an artist.
Beenzino is a very popular rapper in Korea known for his unique flow. If you love K-pop, I recommend listening to his songs. I will share all the songs from his recently released 2nd full album below.
지원이가 여친이랑 헤어진 그날
[Jiwoniga yeochinirang heeojin geunal]
The day Jiwon broke up with his girlfriend
걔는 언제나 네가 없이 그날
[Gyaeneun eonjena nega eopsi geunal]
The day without you he was always
너무 멋있는 옷을 입고 그날
[Neomu meosinneun oseul ipgo geunal]
The day he showed up dressed to the nines
Heard him say
In the chorus that follows, a friend’s boyfriend is flirting with another girl.
Chorus
[Chorus: Haerin, Hyein, Hanni, Minji, *Danielle*]
The lyrics of the chorus are the exact words of a friend’s boyfriend flirting with another girl. However, there is a twist to this song. In the outro of the song, you can see that the message is a lie made up by the speaker of the song.
We can go wherever you like
Baby, say the words and I’m down
All I need is you on my side
We can go whenever you like
Now, where are you? (Mm-mhm)
What’s your ETA? What’s your ETA? (Mm-mhm-mm)
What’s your ETA? What’s your ETA? (Mm-mhm)
*What’s your ETA? What’s your ETA?*
*I’ll be there right now, lose that boy on her arm*
Verse 2
[Haerin, Minji]
아파 맘이 네가 걔 못 잊을 때
[Apa mami nega gyae mon ijeul ttae]
My heart hurts when you can’t let him go
내 말 믿어 you deserve better than that
[Nae mal mideo] you deserve better than that
Trust me you deserve better than that
믿다: trust
내가 도와줄게
[Naega dowajulge]
I’ll give you a hand
걔는 그냥 playin’
[Gyaeneun geunyang] playin’
he’s just playin’
Boys be always lyin’, yeah
Pre-Chorus
[Hyein, Minji, Danielle, Hanni]
내 생일 파티에 너만 못 온 그날
[Nae saengil patie nеoman mon on geunal]
The day you couldn’t come to my birthday party
혜진이가 엄청 혼났던 그날
[Hyejiniga eomchеong honnatdeon geunal]

[Jiwoniga yeochinirang heeojin geunal]

NewJeans – “ETA” Music Video and meaning
The music video for ETA was directed by Shin Woo-seok, who is known for his enigmatic and thought-provoking direction. He previously directed music videos for NewJeans’s ‘Ditto’ and ‘OMG’, which garnered a lot of attention due to his intriguing style. Once again, in ETA, he presents a directing style that leaves plenty of room for interpretation, sparking numerous discussions and interpretations.
Here, I’d like to summarize various interpretations that exist so far and share my own thoughts. As the music video offers plenty of room for interpretation, I encourage others with different perspectives to leave their comments below.
1. Shin Woo-seok, the director, intended to warn about the dangers of baseless “rumors” in the ETA music video.
Director Shin Woo-seok partially revealed the intention of the music video production as follows.
“Hello. Thank you so much for enjoying the music video. However, I prefer not to explain every detail of my projects once they are completed, so I’m afraid I cannot respond to every mystery and speculation surrounding them. To shed light on what I can, I hoped to depict a story of ‘rumors’ in ‘ETA’. In modern society, we all come across truths that we did not witness for ourselves, and we must each determine the grounds to believe these truths. During that process, many truths become distorted and exaggerated. NewJeans, who happened to be delivering the rumor in the story, were also subject to these processes.”
- “If you break down the timeline of this music video, you can see that the time when the woman driving the car picks up the phone, and the time when the NewJeans members make the call, do not match up. The hairband, which was placed next to the phone, does not make an appearance until after the story has begun to unfold. In fact, the woman has already murdered the man, and she is on her way to dispose of the body.”
- “The music video does not tell you whether or not the man actually committed an immoral act. The kiss scene is only a delusion in the woman’s head that she begins to see as she refuses to pick up her phone”
“We are exposed to too much information in this day and age. Yet, we do not think to confirm the validity of this information before we deliver it to others. Thank you once again for your interest in the music video.”
In the ETA music video, director Shin Woo-seok is delivering a warning message about the dangers of “rumors” and “gossip”. He expresses this message through a somewhat bold portrayal of “murder”. It strongly emphasizes how harmful unfounded rumors can be.
According to the revelation made by director Shin Woo-seok himself, it has been confirmed that the part where the woman kills her boyfriend is true, while the scene where the man cheats is just the woman’s imagination. In other words, it was confirmed by the director that the act of committing murder based solely on rumors was a significant aspect in the music video.
2. In the music video, NewJeans played the role of the Greek goddess ATE?
In the music video, the interpretation that ETA represents the reverse of the word “ATE” has garnered widespread support. ATE is a Greek goddess associated with the meaning of “foolish mistakes and delusion”. According to Greek mythology, ATE leads humans to make foolish actions by deceiving them. As a punishment for her wrongdoing, she was exiled from the divine realm by Zeus.
It seems like the members of NewJeans are portraying ATE in the music video. They continuously convey “rumors” to their friend, encouraging “foolish actions (murder)” just like ATE would do.
In the music video, the NewJeans members are constantly telling their friend who is driving that her boyfriend is cheating on her.
It can be interpreted that the NewJeans members are portraying the goddess ATE, who deceives humans into foolish actions. By continuously conveying information without seriously considering its truth, they are encouraging humans to engage in reckless behavior. The friend who blindly believes in rumors ends up committing a rather shocking act of murdering her boyfriend.
Just like the goddess ATE faced criticism and was banished from the divine realm for deceiving humans, the members of NewJeans, who portrayed ATE, cannot avoid the critical gaze of censure.
3. Why was it an iPhone?
Of course, the music video was shot on an iPhone 14 Pro for product placement (PPL) purposes. However, The message the director wanted to convey seems to be in harmony with the use of the iPhone in the music video.
How do rumors spread? Pictures taken with “phones” can quickly propagate through social media, and rumors can also escalate like a snowball during “phone conversations” with acquaintances, often getting exaggerated.
Just like in the music video, rumors attached to videos and photos can end up becoming facts. The truth can be contaminated and distorted through “phones”.
4. ETA music video TMI
The vehicle that appears in the music video is the Austin Montego.
This was the lyrics, Romanized, and English translation post for New Jeans’ ETA. I will finish with the hope that various information about the song was helpful.
